REVIEWS
You’ll love it if… you’re sick of all the lovey-dovey stuff other books can’t seem to leave out of their supernatural stories. There is just the right amount of romance here, but it doesn’t overpower the plot. The fight scenes are terrific, and much more satisfying than listening to people whine about wanting to be together forever!
~ Kara McGrath, Seventeen Magazine

“Conjures up elements of teenage angst: forbidden love, loss, and, of course, supernatural powers, in this fast-paced tale of a young witch coming into her powers.”
~ Nancy L. Claus, Westchester Magazine
http://www.westchestermagazine.com/Westchester-Magazine/July-2011/Beach-Reading/
“The story itself is compelling and interesting, the descriptions of the locales are beautiful, the teen melodrama mostly manages to stay at the level of actual drama, and the ideas are fresher and newer than most in the genre.”
~ Samantha Holloway, Albedo Magazine

“This book has depth in spades. Howard has created a paranormal underworld that exists within in our own, and has given it legend and a mythology, created a believable framework as to how it works, supplied incredibly interesting back story for characters and events, and developed her own fascinating political systems. Verdict? Read this. Yes, it has vampires. Yes, it has witches. And Amalie Howard has blended them together to create a paranormal romance debut that’s both fresh and riveting.”

“Forget what you’ve read about witches and vampires lately. Amalie Howard blows them all out of the water and reminds us that they’re not just friendly creatures with cool superpowers. Bloodspell is deliciously dark, without being overly so. When you least expect it, there are big twists that will get your heart pumping and mind whirring.”

“From the first page this story grabbed me and did not let me go until I closed the book. This narrative moves. It is not kinetic – it is highly compelling. Amalie Howard is a good storyteller and a nuanced writer who knows her material, knows how to draw us in as readers, and clearly cares about her characters – therefore we do. I loved the backstory of Victoria’s family and the connections that are brought forward to the present in the narrative as a riddle for both the protagonist and the reader to discover together. They are beautifully woven into the story from beginning to end.”

“Bloodspell will draw you in from the very first page. With an intriguing prologue, unexpected twists and turns and a unique story line, Amalie blends romance and suspense together smoothly, to create an impressive and captivating story. The struggle that Victoria has with learning to control the power of her blood is written with such fervor, that you will feel Victoria’s struggle as if it is your own.”

“Amalie Howard turned a now seemingly common topic of vampires and witches and made it extraordinary. The mythology that she weaves into the story is fantastic. The plot is complex, full of action, and does not shy away from the dark aspects of vampires and magic. Bloodspell is incomparable to other vampire and witch stories – I highly recommend it!”

“My favorite part of the entire book was the ending. I can’t even describe how amazing it was, it had my blood pounding and I refused to put the book down until I finished it. It stayed with me for awhile after I had flipped the last page. Definitely the most intense scene I’ve read in a long time! The characters were amazing and several scenes had me on the edge of my seat, desperate to find out what happened next. ”

“Amalie’s story and writing captured me immediately. In Bloodspell, Amalie Howard brings young adult readers an exciting story about a seventeen year old girl who is faced with the dark truth of what she is, the brooding and forbidden relationship between a witch and a vampire, a family rivalry between brothers and the on-going battle of power and supremacy. I am really looking forward to the sequel and recommend Bloodspell to YA readers with a passion for forbidden romances, vampires and witches.”

It’s good enough to curl up under your quilt and get lost in the world that Amalie created! A 5/5 stars and a Definite “Good Choice for Reading”.”

~ Ramblings of a Teenage Bookworm

“Here’s the difference between [other books] and Amalie Howard’s Bloodspell: her writing is better, her characters more dynamic, and the plot far richer and more compelling. This is a great read, and it takes the washed out ‘supernatural forbidden love’ premise, adds some twists and makes it exciting to read again. Truly a breath of fresh air! The history and the world building combine and produce a story that is rife with politics, rivalries, betrayal, violence, and yes, death. In Bloodspell. the paranormal element feels like an established world with its very own conflicted history in which a Romeo and Juliet type romance takes place. ”
